Why Most Hair Colours Hide the Truth — And Why NILINI Natural Black Doesn’t

Posted on September 12, 2026 by makeupholicadmin

The problem: hair colour that works, but at a cost you can’t see

Most permanent hair colours on Indian shelves rely on PPD (para-phenylenediamine), the ingredient responsible for rich, long-lasting black and brown tones. PPD isn’t inherently the villain marketing often makes it out to be — it’s an effective, well-studied colourant used worldwide. The real problem is something else entirely: most brands don’t tell you how much PPD is actually in the tube.

Split-screen Nilini Natural Black hair colour infographic highlighting ingredient transparency. The left side shows generic hair colour with undisclosed PPD concentration and vague “natural” claims, while the right side features Shesha Ayurveda Nilini with declared PPD concentration, GMP-certified manufacturing, AYUSH and Drug Controller licensing, EU CPNP registration, and Ayurvedic heritage. The message emphasizes transparency, evidence, and informed hair-colour choices.

That matters because PPD sensitivity varies from person to person, and dermatologists routinely recommend a patch test before colouring, regardless of brand or “natural” claims on the box. Without a declared concentration, a patch test tells you almost nothing about what you’re reacting to or how strong that reaction might be at full application. You’re left trusting a label that says “natural” or “herbal” without any way to verify what that means chemically.

There’s a second, quieter problem: greenwashing. Hair colour brands frequently market themselves as “chemical-free” or “98% natural” while still containing active colourants like PPD. This isn’t just misleading — for a PPD-containing product, an unqualified “chemical-free” or “majority natural” claim doesn’t hold up, and can create genuine regulatory exposure under India’s advertising standards. Consumers are left to figure this out on their own, usually the hard way — after a reaction, not before one.

So the real questions people should be asking about their hair colour aren’t “is it natural?” — they’re:

  • What exactly is in this, and in what amount?
  • Can I verify that before I put it on my scalp?
  • Is the brand actually accountable for what’s inside the box?

How NILINI Natural Black is different

NILINI Natural Black, from Shesha Ayurveda, was built around answering exactly those three questions — not around avoiding them.

1. India’s first on-pack PPD concentration declaration. Rather than claiming to be PPD-free or staying silent on the topic, NILINI states its PPD concentration directly on the pack. This is a first for the Indian hair colour category. It doesn’t remove the need for a patch test — nothing does — but it gives you and, if needed, a dermatologist actual information to work with before you use it, instead of a marketing euphemism.

2. Manufactured under licensed, audited conditions. NILINI is made in a Ayush-certified facility in Hyderabad — The product is manufactured under both an AYUSH licence and a Drug Controller (Ayurvedic drug) licence, which means the formulation and manufacturing process answer to regulatory oversight, not just internal quality checks.

3. Registered for the EU market, not just sold in India. NILINI is EU CPNP registered, which requires meeting a stricter, externally audited set of cosmetic safety documentation standards than what’s mandatory for domestic-only sale. That’s a meaningfully higher bar than most brands in this category clear.

4. Rooted in an actual Ayurvedic lineage, not a marketing story. Shesha Ayurveda’s formulations, including NILINI, come out of a family Ayurvedic tradition from Kerala — the brand name itself derives from the Sanskrit Śeṣa (शेष), “that which remains,” reflecting a philosophy of formulating for what genuinely lasts rather than what merely performs in a demo.

Brand transparency as the actual differentiator

Ayurvedic and “natural” positioning in hair colour has become so overused that it barely differentiates anything anymore. What actually sets a brand apart at this point is what it’s willing to disclose.

NILINI’s transparency approach comes down to a simple principle: declare what’s in the product, get audited on how it’s made, and let people decide with real information — rather than asking them to trust a feel-good word on the front of the box.

That’s the difference between “natural” as a marketing claim and “natural” as a verifiable formulation choice. Shesha Ayurveda’s position isn’t that NILINI has no active chemistry — it’s that you shouldn’t have to guess what that chemistry is, or take the brand’s word for how safely it was made.

The bottom line

If you’re evaluating a hair colour, the label question worth asking isn’t “is this natural?” It’s “can this brand show me what’s inside, and can I verify how it’s made?”

NILINI Natural Black is built to answer both — with a declared PPD concentration on every pack, manufacturing under dual government licences, EU cosmetic safety registration, and a formulation lineage that predates the marketing category it now competes in.

Always conduct a patch test before using any hair colourant, including NILINI, and follow the instructions on the pack.
